Le Mans 1955 will always be remembered. Not because of the fantastic collection of brands and drivers, but because of the greatest catastrophe in racing - the accident that Hawthorn, Macklin and Levegh were unfortunate to be involved in and which took the lives of more than 80 people. Mercedes-Benz withdrew its two cars, allowing Jaguar to take overall victory in the 24 hour race, with drivers Mike Hawthorn and Ivor Bueb in their D-Type.
