In 1967, Porsche was not the favorite for the overall standings - but in the 2-litre class, hopes were placed for a top result and the advertising impact of the Le Mans successes. Jo Siffert and Hans Herrmann brought the 6-cylinder 907 long-tail Porsche to fifth place overall and victory in the category. Jochen Rindt and Gerhard Mitter drove the identical car, but unfortunately retired on lap 103 after nine hours of driving. In 1965, Rindt had won the legendary long-distance race in a Ferrari 250 LM with Masten Gregory.
