Lancaster Bomber and Jaguar D Type
Goodwood Revival Grand Stand and Control Tower
The aerodynamics of the Jaguar D-Type were one of the great strengths of the successful model. At 278 km/h on the Mulsanne straight at Le Mans, it was around 20 km/h faster than the Italian competition. After the tragic victory in 1955, Jaguar withdrew from racing as a factory in 1956, but the years 1956 and 1957 were very successful years for the D-Type powered by a 3.8 liter engine: the 24 H of Le Mans were both times won by Pilot Ron Flockhart won in 1957 with five D-Types in the top six. However, a change in the regulations for the 1958 season to a 3-litre formula prematurely ended hopes of another triumph at Le Mans for the private teams that had used the D-Type so successfully.
