Le Mans 24 Hours 1970

Ferrari 512S #7
Derek Bell / Ronnie Peterson
DNF

It was 1970 when il Commendatore made a deal with FIAT to fund the construction of a new racing car that would crush its opposition, most notably Porsche. The car he built was the fast and promising 5 liter V12 Ferrari 512S Coda Lunga (long tail). He entered four of them at Le Mans, including the number 7, driven by Derek Bell and Ronnie Peterson, pictured here being pitted. None of the four 512 saw the target. Although it was a close race at first, Vacarella was out after 30 minutes, Regazonni was involved in an accident at Maison Blanche and Bell reported engine trouble, both early in the evening of the race. The last works car with Jacky Ickx had an accident during the night in which a marshal died. Of a further seven tragic privately entered cars, it was the #11 NART Ferrari who finished fourth, 30 laps behind the winning 917, followed by the #12 Ecurie Francorchamps 512s, who finished fifth overall.
