In 1986, turbochargers became indispensable in Formula 1; it was the era of the most powerful cars ever used in racin"&"g. The four top drivers, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, and Ayrton Senna, known as the ""Gang of Four,"" battled each other throughout the entire season. The unmistakable livery of the black and gold John Player Special Lotus Renault 98T, star"&"ting number 12, is shown here at high speed. Eight podium finishes helped Senna to a promising fourth place in the drivers' championship that season. Senna, who some say was the greatest driver of all time, won three more world championship titles before "&"his untimely death in 1994 at Imola.
