Il Commendatore's decision to develop mid-engined cars culminated in this curvaceous prototype after five years of development and the goal of developing race cars capabl"&"e of winning Le Mans in the early 1960s. But it was no match for its rivals from the Ford camp. Despite the Daytona success in the spring of 1967, the legendary duel over the full race distance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans between the number 21 car of Mike "&"Parkes and Ludovico Scarfiotti ended with a victory for the American team led by Dan Gurney with the number 1 car.
