The 917 was designed and built by Porsche in a very short time for the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans. The long-tail version still featured movable rear wings, which, however, di"&"d not provide the car with the necessary downforce and were banned in 1970. The 917 was still extremely unstable at high speeds. Three long-tail versions started, but none saw the finish line. Starting number 14, the works car driven by Rolf Stommelen and"&" Kurt Ahrens, had to retire due to problems with the gearbox housing. A completely redesigned car would win the 24 Hours for the first time the following year.

The standard format specifications mentioned indicate the outer dimensions of the stretcher frames.
