The first of four consecutive Le Mans victories by Ford came in 1966, when the GT 40 took the podium. Following the success of the Cobra coupes, Carroll Shelby was entrusted with the Ford factory program – and the result was outstanding: both Shelby-Am"&"erican race cars finished first and second. However, there is still controversy over the closest finish to date. With the intention of creating a carefully arranged photo of the finish, Ford had instructed both cars to cross the line together, albeit sepa"&"rated by a few meters. The leading Ken Miles and Bruce McLaren in second place obediently did as they were instructed. However, neither the two drivers nor the team management had taken the starting grid into account, and in the end the race control decid"&"ed that McLaren and Chris Amon had covered the greater race distance. This meant that Miles and team partner Dennis Hulme had lost the race by approximately eight meters. Also depicted in the Painting are the Porsche 906 of Herrmann/Linge and the Ferrari "&"330 P3 of Bandini/Guichet. Both Ferrari and Porsche had sent an armada of cars and first-class drivers to Le Mans. But Ford secured the one-two finish in a memorable race.
