Like many of his contemporaries, Juan Manuel Fangio competed in a variety of different motorsport categories and cars during a single season. And so it was in 1953 when the later five-time Formula 1 World Champion dovetailed his Grand Prix season with commitments in long-distance races. He started the year by winning the Carrera Panamericana in his native Argentina and made his Targa Florio debut in a Maserati A6 GCS
