In 1956, Wolfgang von Trips raced out of the Le Mans pit lane in his 550A RS Coupé. Best known for his Formula 1 career with Ferrari, the German was also an experienced sports car driver, winning, for example, the major road race of the Targa Florio in 1961, just four months before his untimely racing death at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. A Le Mans veteran with five appearances at the Sarthe, his best result was fifth place overall, shared with Richard Frankenberg. The watercolor shows a section of this race in 1956.
