This image contains forty vehicle images with the Hypercars, LMdH and LMP2 race cars, as well as the GTE race cars of the 2023 season, competing for the last time in the long night and long day of the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Surprisingly, Ferrari leads the field. Followed by the actual favorites, Toyota, who were only slowed down by a surprising BOP regulation. Porsche invested in the American version of the luxury class in the WEC (World Endurance Championship). The Ferrari and Toyota Hypercars manufacture all elements of their 499P and GR010 endurance race cars themselves. Porsche and Cadillac, on the other hand, receive the chassis platform and hybrid system from manufacturers homologated by the FIA and the WEC with organizer ACO. This saves enormous costs – but reduces the chances of being able to repair "problem areas" in-house.
Porsche celebrated the brand's 75th anniversary with the colorful three LMdHs. And the privateer JOTA team already competed with the Porsche 963 painted in elegant gold. All four Porsches fought for the lead. The #75 of the Porsche Penske Motorsport team and the #38 of JOTA from England led for a time.
Cadillac was also in the mix. It's a shame that the red #311 Cadillac crashed into the safety fences right at the beginning of the first chicane. It did come back, but couldn't quite compete with the front runners. The blue #2 and the yellow #3 repeatedly appeared at the front.
Peugeot is continuing to focus on its exciting concept with the 9X8 in 2023. The spoiler-free hypercar repeatedly fought its way to the front – aided by the BOP. During the phases when rain made some sections of the track slippery, the concept of wide front tires proved effective. The #94 car led the field for a considerable time, only to lose it in a seemingly avoidable accident.
Glickenhaus and Vanwall complete the HY field – but in 2023 they will only play outsider roles. The LMP2 contenders are different. This category has always been a playground where tenths of a second, skill, strategy, and a fair amount of racing luck are at stake. The teams from WRT, Inter Europol, JOTA, United Autosport, Prema Racing, IDEC-Sport, Alpine, Duqueine, and Vector Sport are fighting fiercely for the 2023 crown – and for victory at Le Mans in their class. This time, the yellow-green car of the Polish Equipe Inter Europol surprisingly and sensationally wins ahead of the WRT and the Duqueine LMP2.
Behind the colorful LMP2 field comes the highlight of the 2023 edition: the NASCAR from Garage 56. The Chevrolet #24 with Jenson Button, Mike Rockenfeller, and Jimmie Johnson captures the hearts of Le Mans fans in no time. Surprisingly, it keeps all the GTE cars in check and finishes at the back of the LMP2 field. Incidentally, the Hendrick Motorsport pit crew wins the tire change challenge on Tuesday in the Le Mans pit lane.
The GTE puts on its breathtaking show one last time – before it is transformed into the GT3 in 2024. Sarah Bovy in the pink Porsche and Ben Keating in the yellow Corvette put on a brilliant show in the races before Le Mans. This field is also close together, and victory is unpredictable. Safety car periods, which will follow the American formula from 2023 onwards, will regroup the field for the restart in the order of the standings at the moment of the accident that caused it, but even this doesn't help ensure a fair outcome. The correct pit stop decision – chosen in keeping with the miracle of the safety car periods – will decide the 2023 GTE races.
And yet, Keating and Bovy continue to demonstrate their outstanding performance. The Iron Dames in the pink Porsche are becoming Le Mans legends. Likewise, Ben Keating, who is now the first to cross the Le Mans finish line with the third brand. Last year with Aston Martin, in 2023 with the #33 Corvette, and in 2019 with the legendary Wynns Ford GT – which was subsequently stripped of its victory.
The colorful GTE field is currently running through the Ford chicane in watercolor. At the finish, the orange ORT Aston Martin takes second place, ahead of Mark Wainwright's GR Racing Porsche and the acclaimed ladies in the Porsche 911 RSR GTE, which brings its breathtaking sound to the Sarthe for the last time.
