Harald Ertl in a Schnitzer BMW leads the ""Wilde Mote"" of the small division of the 1978 Germ"&"an Racing Championship over the bridge near Breitscheid. Ertl in the BMW 320 got off to the best start and was able to defend the lead until the final lap of the Eifel race, which covered seven laps and just under 160 kilometers. Ertl defended himself bri"&"lliantly against all the maneuvers of Markus Höttinger in the Fruit of the Loom BMW 320 and pole-sitter Hans Heyer in the black, red, and yellow Zakspeed Escort, but a gearbox failure ultimately left him in fifth place. Höttinger won with a 20-second lead"&". A brilliant duel between Heyer and Eddie Cheever in the works BMW 320 with the M-Sport livery ended with second place for the American. The two overtook each other several times - and exchanged paint in the process.
