Submarine, built at Germaniawerft / Kiel in 1902

The development of German submarines dates back to 1849, when the Bavarian soldier Wilhelm Bauer conceived the idea of an underwater submarine during the Schleswig-Holstein War. In Kiel, he real"&"ized a model, which was built in 1850 by August Howaldt at Schweffel and Howaldt under the name ""Brandtaucher."" Wilhelm Bauer's test submarine, which was still incomplete due to a lack of funds, sank during a test run. The experimental submarine with th"&"e hull number 333, built in 1897 and designed by Karl Leps, was followed in 1902 by the construction of the ""Forelle."" It was based on plans by the engineer Raymondo Lorenzo d'Equevilley-Montjustin, who in turn were influenced by the designs of the desi"&"gners Claude Gobet, Gustave Zédé, and Isaac Peral, as well as by the Englishman Waddington. She was the first practical German submarine, equipped with a conning tower, a periscope, an air purification system, and a bilge pump. A 715 ampere-hour battery p"&"owered the electric motor. At a speed of four knots, the Forelle's range was approximately 25 nautical miles.
