Safety first β given the accident rates of the 1950s, this motto was no surprise. As early as 1959, the W111 took vehicle interior safety to new levels. It was the first car to feature a stable passenger cell and effective crumple zones. The wedge-pin "&"door locks prevented the doors from opening in an accident, thus preventing the occupants from being ejected. To achieve this protective effect, test vehicles were deliberately induced to roll over at 80 km/h. The steering wheel featured an impact plate w"&"ith an elastic cover, and the dashboard featured recessed controls and information elements. All for safety in the event of an accident. The body with the ""tail fins"" was designed by Bruno Sacco for Mercedes Benz.
