Streamlined Body
The 1954 Italian Grand Prix was won in September 1954 by Juan Manuel Fangio in a Mercedes W196 with a streamlined body, sealing his world championship title in a year that included eight"&" Formula 1 Grand Prix wins. Two months earlier, the streamlined version of the W196 was tested for the 1954 French Grand Prix on the high-speed triangular circuit of Reims-Gueux. However, its fuel consumption on practice days, at 40 liters per 100 km, was"&" too high to reach the checkered flag after 500 kilometers with the original tank capacity. Therefore, the W 196 was upgraded with an additional tank in the left sidepod on the last night before the race. Fangio won this third Grand Prix of the 1954 seaso"&"n in the beautiful Champagne region. It was a special day for German athletes: It wasn't until 1954, nine years after the end of World War II, that German athletes were finally allowed to participate in official international sporting events, and the Germ"&"an football team won the final in Bern's Wankdorf Stadium, thus becoming World Cup winners on that very same day. Hans Hermann said: ""At first, we as German athletes felt very uncomfortable, being on French soil for the first time after this terrible war"&", but this day of victory for the Mercedes team and the national team in the summer of 1954 helped us all to see our shattered self-image a little better in the reflection of ourselves as Germans."" Hermann set the fastest lap time at the French Grand Pri"&"x, but his engine gave up too early. Fangio and Kling took first and second place.
