Le Mans 24 Hours 2017, Aston Martin V8 - Corvette C7.R
Winning at Le Mans is always a lottery. Usually, there's at least one sister car, with three other drivers hoping to add their names to the legendary list of winners. In strong years, there are several, if not many, cars and drivers capable of winning in each category. The desire to be at the front is naturally strong, but hard work and dedication alone aren't enough; luck also has to be on your side. So, if it looks like you're in with a chance of winning 45 minutes before the end of the "24-hour race," that's already a stroke of luck beyond your grasp. But if a competitor is just seconds behind or ahead of you, that's the height of excitement. It's not enough to hope that the car will hold out; now it's also a matter of seconds. The pressure on the two drivers, Jordan Taylor in the #63 Corvette and Jonny Adam in the #96 Aston Martin Vantage, couldn't have been greater in 2017. Both had a penalty kick that would take them to the World Championship, and 800 million television viewers were watching their feet on the accelerator of their spectacular GTE racing cars. England versus the USA, Aston versus Corvette. Drama and madness, bleary-eyed euphoria in the two team garages, the tension evident on every face of the mechanics and engineers, co-drivers and managers, guests and sponsors glued to their monitors in the two overcrowded garages. And of course, the 250,000 spectators along the track also knew what a thriller was about to happen. The Corvette was leading by just a few meters – what a stroke of fate – after the last pit stop. Jordan Taylor held the trump card of a one-second lead. But Taylor brakes too late in the second chicane at the Hunaudières. He slides over the green of the chicane and even gains distance, extending his lead. But the left front tire has suffered in the process. The slow puncture becomes increasingly obvious, becoming a major handicap. Taylor, with the lurching Corvette, fights his way through the Porsche Curves in the lead, and to make matters worse, loses the lead while braking into the Ford Chicane – in full view of everyone in the cauldron of the Le Mans grandstands. The now much better-positioned Aston, with Adams at the wheel, overtakes the yellow Corvette in front of the main grandstand and the pits, right at the finish line. On the last lap, Adam drives past the unfortunate Jordan Taylor – amidst the infernal sound of the announcer's voice culminating in the thousands of electrified English spectators. Just as everyone realized that Taylor was fighting with blunt weapons, arch-rival Ford arrived with the #67 car and snatched second place from the Corvette. What a debacle for Corvette, what an incredible last-minute victory for Adam and his team. The Aston pit box was completely boiling over. The cameraman stayed on the completely crazed Englishman for minutes. Understandably. What an experience for all non-Corvette fans.
