A racing accident in the first hour of the 1956 race eliminated two of the three Jaguar works cars, with the third finishing in sixth place. But the D-Type of the Scottish Ecurie Ec"&"osse team won the race with the Scottish driver pairing of Ninian Sanderson and Ron Flockhart. Sanderson, an avid racing sailor, was a down-to-earth Glaswegian and a fan of simple jokes. Edinburgh-born Flockhart, on the other hand, was a sophisticated sou"&"l who tragically lost his life in 1962 during a world record attempt to beat the Sydney-London time. The Ecurie Ecosse team cruised to victory at Le Mans in 1956, crossing the finish line first with Flockhart at the wheel. Sanderson secured the pair's sec"&"ond Le Mans victory in 1957, crossing the finish line for the duo the following year.
