A racing accident in the first hour of the 1956 race eliminated two of the three Jaguar works cars, with the third finishing sixth. But the D-Type of the Scottish Ecurie Ecosse team won the race with the Scottish driver pairing Ninian Sanderson and Ron Flockhart. A keen yachtsman, Sanderson was a down-to-earth Glaswegian and fond of simple jokes. Edinburgh-born Flockhart, on the other hand, was a fine spirit who tragically lost his life in a 1962 world record attempt to beat the Sydney – London record time. The Ecurie Ecosse team drove to victory at Le Mans in 1956, crossing the finish line first with Flockhart at the wheel. Sanderson secured the pairing's second Le Mans win the following year in 1957 when he crossed the finish line for the duo.
