In the small town of Karnerau, near Gmünd in Austria, the construction number 356 was developed in a former Ferry Porsche sawmill. This design drawing was used to produce the first Porsche brand vehicle, which was offered as the Porsche 356 from 1948. On June 8, 1949, after almost a year of production in the Karnerau premises, Ferry Porsche tested the car on the Katschberg and on the nearby Turracherhöhe. At times, up to 300 employees produced a total of 44 coupés and 8 cabriolets of the 356 type in Karnerau by 1950. The designs for the all-wheel drive Cisitalia Tipo 360, the Porsche 312 and 313 tractors, as well as for ski lifts and cable winches and through-flow turbines for agriculture were also created in Karnerau .
