Mercedes-Benz and Sauber entered into a motorsport partnership between 1987 and 1989 that would pay off."&" An aluminum monocoque weighing just 48 kg and made of 1.2 to 2 mm thick sheet metal was fitted with a heart capable of producing up to 800 hp in qualifying and around 720 hp in the race. The Mercedes V8 biturbo powered the initially dark blue Kouros Raci"&"ng and then factory silver Sauber-Mercedes endurance racing cars to a top speed of 389 km/h on the Mulsanne Straight – in those days when there were no chicanes on the Hunaudières. In 1989, the C9 played all its aces, winning seven of eight world champion"&"ship races and triumphing at the season highlight – the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
