Between 1987 and 1989, Mercedes-Benz and Sauber entered into a motorsport partnership that was to pay off. A heart with up to 800 hp in qualifying and around 720 hp in the race was implanted in an aluminum monocoque weighing just 48 kg with 1.2 to 2 mm thick sheet metal. The V8 biturbo from Mercedes propelled the first dark blue Kouros Racing and then the factory silver Sauber-Mercedes long-distance racing cars to a top speed of 389 km/h on the Mulsanne straight – in the days when there were no chicanes on the Hunaudières. In 1989, the C9 played all the trumps, winning seven out of eight world championship races and winning the highlight of the season – the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
