The racing version of the versatile and remarkably robust 904, or Carrera GTS, designed by "Butzi" Porsche, was released by the factory in late 1963 for competition in the FIA GT class the following season - with the road-going version following in parallel to comply with homologation regulations. It had a frame chassis, a Heinkel fiberglass body, and was equipped with a 2-liter four-cylinder mid-mounted engine and five-speed gearbox. The GTS accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in under 6 seconds and reached a top speed of approximately 240 km/h. In its first year of service, it finished first and second in the Targa Florio, third in the 1000 km Nürburgring, class winner at Le Mans, and second in the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally - the exact same car that had finished second in the Targa Florio the previous year. A very successful model.
