In 1972 Matra had to contend with the new rules of the 3 liter sports car formula and track changes - five new corners known as Porsche corners and a new pit entrance. Three of their striking Gitanes blue painted V12 Matra MS670s competed against the new and untested Alfa Romeo 33 TT3s and aging 6 cylinder Porsches. Before the race, Ferrari had withdrawn the entire commitment from the plant. Start number 15 with Henri Pescarolo and Graham Hill beat the competition and won ahead of the sister car in second place. Pescarolo managed the hat trick at Le Mans in a similar car by also winning the next two Le Mans 24 hour races. Hill's victory at Le Mans, combined with victories at the Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix, made him the only triple winner at those races.
