Rock groups and cars are closely linked, though few combinations are as famous as that of John Lennon and his signature Rolls Royce. The Beatles' Phantom V was actually black when delivered to the band in 1965, but was soon given a change to suit the "psychedelic zeitgeist". It is believed that the inspiration for the design came from an old gypsy cart he had in his garden. Steve Weaver was commissioned to paint the car in a similar style in 1967. Five years after the musician's death, Sotheby's auctioned off the Rolls for the then-record sum of $2.29 million.
