Often cited as the most beautiful car ever made, the Jaguar E-Type also achieved some success on the track, although it took a spirited gentleman driver to demonstrate its potential. Roy Salvadori and Graham Hill had already raised hopes in a Series 1 E-Type prepared by John Coombs shortly after it went into production in 1961, and it was this vehicle that became the basis for the official works racing cars that were introduced two years later. The steel chassis, derived from the Le Mans winning D-Type, which now had an aluminum body and engine block, not to mention the aerodynamic hardtop, proved to be a more than potent GT vehicle in the hands of privateers, too if it lacked top speed compared to the rivals.
