Joakim Bonnier's Lola T70 leads the race on the home straight at Le Mans ahead of Nanni Galli's Matra MS670 and Jacky Ickx' Ford GT 40. This was the final year of the traditional start, with drivers running across the track to their cars. Indeed, in protest, Ickx walked leisurely across the track at the start and was the last to get off the start. But not that that would have mattered. The Belgian and his co-driver Jackie Oliver stormed to victory, albeit only 120 meters ahead of the Herrmann/Larrousse Porsche 908. This went down in the history of Le Mans as the closest finish in a hard-fought 24-hour race.
