The Lola T70 of Joakim Bonnier leads ahead of the Matra MS670 of Nann"&"i Galli and Jacky Ickx' Ford GT 40, the race started on the start and finish straight at Le Mans. This was the last year of the traditional start, in which the drivers ran across the track to their cars. In protest, Ickx actually walked leisurely around t"&"he track at the start and was the last to leave the starting grid. But not that it made any difference. The Belgian and his co-driver Jackie Oliver stormed to victory, albeit only 120 meters ahead of the Porsche 908 of Herrmann/Larrousse. This went down i"&"n the history of Le Mans as the closest finish in a hard-fought 24-hour race.
