“Le Mans is still the biggest racing event in the world - and I was a driver, participant and spectator. It's the only race where the amateur driver gets the honor of going up against the world's greatest sports car drivers like Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx and Henri Pescarolo. It's the sight and the sound, as well as the red-hot brake discs in the dark as the cars brake into the chicane, and the headlights flickering eerily through the trees on the Mulsanne Straight, mixed with the deafening howl of the cars - and of course the smell in the cockpit – of both brake discs and hot oil, and once per lap, the smell of fried onions wafting in from the fairground.”
