24 Hours of Le Mans 1965
#21
Masten Gregory / Jochen Rindt
1st place overall, 1st place in P 5.0 category
Masten Gregory, known as the "Kansas City Blitz", was handsome but unfortunately had to wear very thick glasses - a result of his very poor eyesight. He drove the 24 Hours of Le Mans seventeen times, and most of them, and with the greatest success he drove Ferrari. Jochen Rindt, who was born in Mainz, represented Austria in his racing career. In addition to his success in Formula 1, there were four races at Le Mans. He tragically died in 1970 while practicing for the Italian Grand Prix and is the only driver to have been awarded the World Championship after his death. In 1965 the two drove a Ferrari 250 LM, one of Enzo Ferrari's early mid-engined sports cars, used by the North American Racing Team (NART) founded by Italian-born Luigi Chinetti. Gregory and Rindt won the race.
