The Spitfire is still the "living" synonym for the successful defense of Britain against the German Luftwaffe in the war years 1940 and 1941. Its outstanding maneuverability in corner combat made it a strong opponent for the German pilots in their Messerschmitt 109s. Frank Holroyd, Harold J Payn and Joseph Smith worked at Supermarine from 1930 to 1945 developing and refining the legendary Spitfire.
