Botswana offers many national parks - including the Nxai Pan in the middle of the country. We camped in the inhospitable "Pan" - which has a lot of sand and bushes and all kinds of trees in an airy stock to offer. The campsite in the middle of the park was an amazing place. A shower building in the middle of nowhere, numerous old large trees and about five other Land Rovers, some of which had arrived as a group. In the morning and in the evening everyone was on safari, in the evening and at noon we met. One night you can hear the lions in the area - and soon after that the elephant that "belongs" to this campsite. Her roar was deafening - and impressive - even from about 100 yards away. In the days that followed, I painted this hunting scene - which we didn't get to see live. It is supposed to depict the power of the lions - and the relentless struggle for survival, but also the wonderful coloration and shape of the wildebeests - who rightly have their name Wilderbeeasts in English.
