De Havilland DH88,
MacPherson Air Race, London to Sidney 1934, winn"&"er, Grosvenor House,
flying over Palmyra Valley, Syria.

The De Havilland Aircraft Company built a total of 127 aircraft between 1915 and 1959. Among the many, the DH.88 Comet was one of the most outstanding aircraft, ta"&"king off for its maiden flight on September 8, 1934. It was built specifically for the Victorian Centennial Air Race. Geoffrey de Havilland was determined that Great Britain would win the air race and placed a newspaper advertisement offering to build a r"&"acing plane for 5,000 pounds. The MacRobertson Air Race took off on October 20, 1934 - just 40 days after the maiden flight of the DH.88. It took participants from Mildenhall in England to Melbourne in Australia. The Royal Aero Club set the distance at 18"&",200 km and offered 27 bases along the way for refueling. Some airfields even had to be expanded for the race. 60,000 people witnessed the start. The participants and their aircraft came primarily from England, Australia and the USA. Jim Mollison and Amy "&"Johnson took part in the black Comet - both well-known aviators and record breakers - and were thus a well-known dream couple of the Commonwealth. The ""Black Magic"" led the race until Karachi - but the dream pair had to let both aircraft engines and the"&"ir dream of winning the race burst during an unscheduled stop in Jobbolpore (India) due to the use of inferior fuel. The three-engine Pander S4 ""Panderjager"" of the Dutch pilots Geysendorffer, Asjes and Pronk, one of the favorites, destroyed an engine o"&"n landing in Allahabad - which meant they too were eliminated. The Dutch Douglas DC-2 ""Uiver"" had often been in second place over the four days of racing. In Singapore, Parmentier, Moll, van Brugge and Prins were only about eight hours behind the leadin"&"g red Comet in their DC-2. In the end, however, the ""Grosvenor House"" Comet with C.W.A. Scott and T. Campbell Black had a lead of more than 18 hours. They were the first to reach Melbourne after
71 hours and went on to win. Followed by the US crew T"&"urner/Pangborn/Nichols with their Being 247-D, who reached the destination after 92 hours and 55 minutes.
