Farman Goliath F60, Paris - London,
First Flight of an Airbus
Pilot: Montbousson, February 1919
On Februa"&"ry 8 and 9, 1919, pilot Lucien Bossoutrot, his mechanic Lhomde, and twelve British military personnel attempted the first flight of a commercial passenger aircraft from Toussus-le-Noble near Paris to Kenley near London. The ""Airbus"" Farman Goliath took "&"off at 11:50 a.m. on February 8, 1919. It arrived safely in Kenley near Croydon, England, two hours and 30 minutes later. The FF-60 prototype made its first flight without passengers at the end of October 1918. However, the German surrender on November 7,"&" 1918, canceled the French Air Force's order for a heavy bomber from Farman. At Farman's Billancourt facility, where the Goliath aircraft were assembled, production was immediately switched to commercial aircraft—the birth of commercial aviation. Farman's"&" Goliath ""Airbus"" was introduced in December 1918 in the French magazine ""L'Aerophile"" by Ernest Archdeacon as follows: ""The passenger gondola, with the exception of the exit to the pilot's elevated control seat, is shaped like an elegant, completely"&" enclosed lounge. It is equipped with comfortable, lightweight wicker chairs. Its long cigar shape, which appears large and spacious, is flooded with light thanks to the use of large, sturdy windows. Passengers do not miss a thing of the breathtaking view"&" of the landscape that spreads out before their eyes.
